Highlights from the Chat with Michael J. Anderson (Samson) and Amanda

Alrighty, this was a rather difficult chat to summarize because we didn't employ the Red Light/Green Light method of asking questions. The best that I could do was to condense the chat and eliminate much of the dialogue so that the conversation flows smoothly and you can still (hopefully) understand what the guests are talking about. But be warned that this transcript is going to jump around A LOT and the subjects range from their thoughts as to why Carnivale may have been canceled to a discussion of their favorite type of cheese. This is also quite lengthy because the chat was over four hours long. I didn't tidy up the spelling/punctuation nor did I remove the names of the people asking the questions this time because it was too labor intensive.

SmutCutter: Very cool! What else have you been up to since the show
ended?

AmandaAday: I worked on National Lampoon's new movie "Pledge This"

SmutCutter: Conrats! Good sized part?

AmandaAday: Yes it revenge of the nerds for girls' and I am one of
the nerds

nicole: when will the nl movie be released?

AmandaAday: supposedly this Nov.

KateBCG: Do ya have glasses with tape on them--personal dream. *wink*

SmutCutter: Anything else in the works for you? Do you live here in
Los Angeles?

AmandaAday: Yep I live here in LA. I have a few things up my
sleeves, but I they are all hush hush!

SmutCutter: LOL cool! So no work on Carnivale coming back I guess -
do you see Dora Mae coming back in a spirit form if the show did
return?

AmandaAday: Dan and I discussed it briefly but really it's up to
him, I would love to more than anything though

purplpepl_eater: what is up with the peeling skin scene...I wonder
every time I see it?

AmandaAday: Much like snakes and other reptiles Gecko sheds, so I
help groom him when he does

dlhalper: Were you surprised by the loyal and passionate response
you've gotten from Carnivale fans?

AmandaAday: I have been suprised by the response I've gotten from
the show. But I knew going into it that the show would be something
amazing.

dlhalper: Amanda, do you and any of the other cast members keep in
touch?

AmandaAday: I haven't kept in touch with anyone saddly, we've all
been very busy I think

MichaelJAnderson: hello

AmandaAday: Hi Michael

MichaelJAnderson: Let's shake some dust here people!

KateBCG: Amanda, was it hard for you going into a project with such
an ensemble cast knowing you would only be around for five eps? It
was such a shock to us, the audience...

AmandaAday: Not at all. I definetly cried when it was time to leave,
but I was so honored to be apart of the whole thing

MichaelJAnderson: Amanda! Hi.

KateBCG: Michael and Amanda, it's your call, but usually the
questioning goes much smoother when we employ red light green light.

AmandaAday: red light green light?

MichaelJAnderson: I'm flexible

CBFCBeth: it's like the kids game -- you say Green Light when you
want us to send questions, and Red Light when you need time to answer

blondeambition: Oh gosh..how can we not be reminded of the scene
where Samson sees the 'ghostly miners' pull Dora Mae away from the
window!!

MichaelJAnderson: I liked that scene too. It was actuallly one of my
favorites.

Cooch__n_Such: Was the Stangler the person who pulled Dora Mae away
from the window?

MichaelJAnderson: no, just a dead miner

AmandaAday: it was a very emotional scene for me

MichaelJAnderson: Rodrigo really gave me a chance that day

dlhalper: Michael, how much input did you have into your character?
It was such an amazing job of acting!

MichaelJAnderson: Dan Knauf kept steering me towards the character,
till I had Samson.

purplpepl_eater: I noticed that harlot was no longer on your
forehead.

AmandaAday: No in death you revert to your normal self.

MichaelJAnderson: Harlot was on her body, not her soul

blondeambition: I am assuming that wasnt really YOU hanging from the
tree when Jonesy found Dora Mae?

AmandaAday: Oh yes it was, I was in a harness on a crane

AmandaAday: it was soo much fun

Diane: WEre you also lowered into the ground, Amanda?

MichaelJAnderson: That wasn't really her in the grave.

AmandaAday: That was a dummy body in the grave

MichaelJAnderson: Meatloaf is Amanda's dad, for those not in the
know.

kaya: Hey Michael, how would you describe the relationship with
Samson & Management?

MichaelJAnderson: It was symbiotic.

MichaelJAnderson: almost codependant

MichaelJAnderson: The samson char. lost a lot when they killed mgmt.

Michelle: amanda, how did your father feel about you being in show
business?

AmandaAday: He has encouraged me all the way.

AmandaAday: He is a wonderfull father and a great inspiration. He is
also quite humble and often comes to me for advice as well.

CBFCBeth: I thought the Samson and Jonesy relationship was amazing
too -- you guys were terrific together!

MichaelJAnderson: Tim and I would sing broadway showtunes between
takes.

dlhalper: I disagreed with killing off managment, but hey it's
Carnivale-- we can bring him back next season!

MichaelJAnderson: The end of the mgmt character was the beginning of
the end of the show for me.

blondeambition: I think of it as..the beginning of the beginning!
With Ben taking on the role of management!

MichaelJAnderson: Whaat would have been fun is if Ben had been
horribly mangled in his encounter with BJustin and took up exactly
where mgmt lft off.

Trish_from_Memphis: oh yeah that would be creepy, like that dream
where he was limbless

SmutCutter: Completing the cycle that is destined to repeat
forever... yea?

MichaelJAnderson: exactly

Cherie70: Michael: I I think that is what the story was eluding
to. Did DK say this much or not?

me: both Ben & Justin should have been disabled!

MichaelJAnderson: mgmt was his future.

capobianco: sampson and bens relationship is great as well

dlhalper: But there COULD be another incarnation of mgmnt-- it would
make sense. I can't picture

me: Lila could pick on diabled Ben/ Iris on diabled Justin

MichaelJAnderson: a spinoff series where samson and lila open a
brothel

KateBCG: Michael, would you say that Sampson and Lodz were on even
par with their knowledge of "what was going on"....Ben was luck to
have so many clued in people...

MichaelJAnderson: Yes, but they learned it in very different ways.

Trish_from_Memphis: alrighty...hmmm what about management and Bro
Justin, Scudder and Ben all in that coffee shop and the window
explodes....was that to be explained later or were we supposed to
already know what happened there

MichaelJAnderson: the coffee shop was just a symolic tableau of the
whole circumstance.

purplpepl_eater: but when Ben goes to Samson instead of Lodz, and
Samson says he dosen't know much, does he know more than he is
letting on...or does he find out more later?

MichaelJAnderson: Samson is smart enough to know that we don't know
much no matter how much we know.

MichaelJAnderson: Samson was always trying to figure things out. He
was putting it together.,

Aprilsong: Ms. Aday-are you concentrationg on acting or so you sing
also?

AmandaAday: No singing for me, I leave that to my sis. Just acting
for now,a nd i am trying to break into plus size modeling

CBFCBeth: You'll be a great model Amanda!

AmandaAday: Thanks.

Babylon, Did you fel pressured to be as "thin" as say Carla Gallo?

AmandaAday: Never Carla is gorgeous and I have no desire to be
thinner. I am trying to break down the walls for plus size actresses

MichaelJAnderson: Amanda, your a hottie if I ever saw one. Yum.

dlhalper: Michael, are you surprised at the devotion the fans of
this show have? Has Dan filled you in on our efforts to save
Carnivale?

MichaelJAnderson: He has. I'm not that surprised. I've seen this
before with Twin Peaks.

Diane: Michael, Your character had the best one-liners in the show.
Did you have any input as to some of the humor? Any improv?

MichaelJAnderson: No improv.

zeeny: Question, Michael J and/or Amanda. What explanation did you
get from writers/screenplay directors on the window scene in the
Babylon episode?(I'm not asking what it means, but what did they
tell you, if you remember and if they indeed said anything)

MichaelJAnderson: While we were shooting Rodrigo came up and
whispered in my ear, "This is you little girl".

MichaelJAnderson: oop YOUR little girl

MichaelJAnderson: Like as if I had thought of dora as my daughter.

MichaelJAnderson: didn't want to. what a sad scene.

AmandaAday: Um about the window scene... that was showing that I had
crossed over and been trapped in Bab as well.

k8tea: Michael or Amanda--were you able to watch final episodes as
you filmed or wait until it was broadcast?

MichaelJAnderson: broadcast

Aprilsong: Ms. Aday-- Cynthia has told us she was nervous about
doing the nudity--How did you feel about it?

AmandaAday: About the nudity... I was definetly nervous. But I
understood it as a necessity for the context of the show. So I took
a shot of whiskey and tore the robe right off!

AmandaAday: That was one of my favorites scenes too. Not too hard to
flirt with Nick and such a great piece of writting

blondeambition: it was great Amanda! EVEn tho Nick didnt say a
WORD! He didnt have to! lol

AmandaAday: A little secret about that scene... I was over heard
saying that about my boob in costuming and Dawn asked if she could
write it the script somewhere and that scene was born.

Trish_from_Memphis: so it's true Amanda> Is it really bigger than
the other

me: one of mine is bigger than the other one too

MichaelJAnderson: asymetry is something I admire.

MichaelJAnderson: although in the face of Amanda's nudity I can
barely remember the context.

Belka: Michael, can you tell us what happened between Mgmt and Lodz
in St. Louis?

MichaelJAnderson: They had a torrid love affair and a painful break-
up. (joke)

Bensgirl_Jenn<---: Michael what charecter would you say you had the
best relationship onscreen chemistry with?

MichaelJAnderson: They all seem to be relatively handy.

blondeambition: If Jonesy had really left the carnivale like he said
he was going to..what do you think Samson would have felt about it?

MichaelJAnderson: sad but not injured.

blondeambition: sad but not injured re: Jonesy leaving? Sorry..didnt
know if that reply was to my ?

spindley: Michael, you were terrific in mulholland drive, i loved
that movie

MichaelJAnderson: re; mulholland. quit while your a head.

loved "Humbug", and you were so funny.

me: Amanda who killed you? Was it Ben?

AmandaAday: Stangler killed me so that the miners would have someone
to "Dance" with.

Bensgirl_Jenn<---: Amanda did you always know that your charecter
was only going to be in a few episodes and if so did it make it any
harder for you knowing when your time was up?

AmandaAday: Yes I always knew. At first they wouldn't tell me why
though.

Nayzo: Michael, huge fan of yours since Twin Peaks (loved the
backwards talk). I was wondering how much of Samson is you adding
to the character (I apologize if this has already been asked)

MichaelJAnderson: Samson is really a lot more like my dad.

LexxiSmiles: If we ask really nicely will you come to Carny Con,
Michael? Amanda will be there....that should be reason enough! ;)

MichaelJAnderson: How nice?

AmandaAday: I year to play MAry Queen of Scotts. Or any classical
character, shakespeare is my passion.

MichaelJAnderson: I've always wanted to play Rigoletto

crowvshawk: Mr. Anderson I just graduated from NYU film, you were in
Brett Ratners thesis there right?

MichaelJAnderson: I sure was.

Bensgirl_Jenn<---: Amanda , What was it like audtioning for Dora Mae?

AmandaAday: It was fun. John, who cast the show, is an aquaintance
so we just chatted away.

LexxiSmiles: Michael, did DK give you much of Samson's back story?
I've always wondered about it since he threw that card of his in
Dora's grave.

MichaelJAnderson: I have almost a complet biography for him. DK
wrote a bible of secret facts re: the show.

LexxiSmiles: wow....I would love to get my hands on that...

MichaelJAnderson: What's my first bid for the secret bible? (joke)

AmandaAday: No, my dad is very quite and is a total comp nerd when
he's home

a script for her I'd love to talk with both of you about it , some
great roles available!

MichaelJAnderson: I work with Adrienne anytime, anywhere

crowvshawk: Well I'm meeting with her soon on it, Michael eventually

in development.

tv or in the movies?

MichaelJAnderson: I'm a SF fan. I like head twisters.

AmandaAday: I love adult swim, entourage, I'm a huge B horror fan,
and dark comedies like snatch

MichaelJAnderson: I liked deadwood before all the legalese.

nicole: who are your favorite authors Ms aday?

AmandaAday: I am obssed woth Palahniuk ("Fight Club") and Clive
Barker's Abarat series

AmandaAday: Haunted really? I loved it.

thorshammer34: Micheal, I love the scene in which Samson is
confronted by Stroud, and doesn't yeild an inch, big lug proven not
so tough ... any real life experiences help with that scene?
because Samson stopped him dead in his tracks, Stroud was obviously
set aback

MichaelJAnderson: I lived 10 yrs in NY. plenty of exp like that.

Michelle: so, michael and amanda...any moments that strike you as
your favourite?

MichaelJAnderson: Beleive it or not, I think my scene with Amanda
was my best scene.

AmandaAday: There was a scene that was cut between Gecko and I that
predicted my demise, but I'd have to say The scene at the bar
between stangler and I we had some very fun chemistry

blondeambition: Michael..the walking cane that Samson uses..was that
for character only?

MichaelJAnderson: yes, I don't normally use one but sometimes after
12 takes or so, I was glad I had it.

rosetintedworld: were there alot of scenes cut out of the show?

AmandaAday: Not too many no

SmohQ: Hi Amanda, Michael! wow you're both here

MichaelJAnderson: yes "here"

crowvshawk: Michael what were you told about the monologues for
season one and two openings

MichaelJAnderson: We did about four versions of the season one
opening. they didn't use my favorite version, where samson was about
75yr old.

Aprilsong: Anyone either of you would like to work with and haven't?

AmandaAday: too many people to name, one that jumps out is Chris
Walken

MichaelJAnderson: Speilberg, Kubrick, scorcese,

AmandaAday: yeah them too lol

mind for Brother Justin when he started writing Carnivale!

AmandaAday: I never knew that, I would have collapsed

MichaelJAnderson: rodrigo's new film "Nine Lives" is really awesom.

crowvshawk: the opening of carnivale at bens house by rodrigo "a la
grapes of wrath" is brillant

crowvshawk: Just curious Michael what was a young Brett Ratner
like? Did he have a clue?

AmandaAday: what's with the rattner obsession?

MichaelJAnderson: He was brilliant. But tortured his less talented
older brother unmercifully with it.

Cherie70: KateBCG: I did not see that my question was answered.
Have any of our Protests with the tarot cards and cancelling hbo
work?

KateBCG: Beth answered that--since we do not work for HBO, we can't
really say, but the fact that it's getting media coverage is a good
enough starting point.

MichaelJAnderson: There's politics behind the scenes of Carnivale
that contributed to it's demise and to its continued absence that we
could not begin to shar.

zeeny: now you have to say more

KateBCG: he just basically said he couldn't. LOL

LexxiSmiles: So does that mean you weren't surprised when it was
cancelled? I was upset.

AmandaAday: He can't industry ettiquette

AmandaAday: yes it is called a life cast. It is a mold that is made
from my face, arms and hands. The rest is carved foam

out your nose to breathe

AmandaAday: I enjoyed it but I'm kinda crazy

MichaelJAnderson: Amanda, can I make a lifecast of your chest?

Stumpy while mine was Samson.

originally it was the story of a good man who turns evil and a bad
man who turns good. Instead we got the story of a bad man REVEALED
to be good and a good man REVEALED to be bad. not as good an idea.

really "wanted" to be good, and Justin never believed he was bad...

AmandaAday: sorta of I knew I would only be doing 5 or 6 eps and
around ep 4 they told me why

of God to humanity but when they rejected his truth he rejected
humanity. Ben just wanted to look out for himself but when he saw
all the pain in the world and that he could help it started wanting
to help.
